Journey through uncharted territories! With wit and nerve, three intrepid, female, Victorians navigate their way through the various locales of Terra Incognita, the last undiscovered land on the globe. Their friendship and courage will be tested as they explore and contemplate a woman’s place in the world. They word play, problem solve, and collect artifacts as they travel through time. But their main goal is to prove their worth!

The amazing cast includes: Penelope Chan (Dead Man’s Cell Phone), Barbara Madison Hauck (The Thanksgiving Play), Niki Jay (Machinal), Morgan Stanton (Dead Man’s Cell Phone), and Shelby Sullivan (Stick Fly).  Designed to perfection by: Adrienne Cassara (lighting design), Penelope Chan (props, hair, and makeup), Anna McGreevey (costume design), Tim Marrone (movement), Justin Nepomuceno (scenic design), Benni Rose (props), Michael Salconi (choreography), Heiko Speaker (sound design), and Kay-Megan Washington (intimacy direction).

On the Verge; or The Geography of Yearning  is directed by FPCT Artistic Director Kimberley Lynne, who always wanted to explore its magical text that centers adventuring and independent women. Lynne is a playwright, with over forty of her plays having  been produced. She also produced and directed Spotlight UB at the University of Baltimore for ten years. She last directed the record-breaking Dead Man’s Cell Phone at FPCT in 2023.

Playwright Eric Overmyer won both the Writers Guild award and the Edgar Award for his work on The Wire. He also served as writer or producer for Homicide: Life on the Street, St. Elsewhere, Law & Order, New Amsterdam, Bosch, and Treme. In addition to his Baltimore television storytelling connections, On the Verge; or, the Geography of Yearning premiered at Center Stage in 1986, directed by Jackson Phippin who served as its Associate Artistic Director.

Mel Gussow of The New York Times calls this play, "A frolicsome jaunt through a continuum of space, time, history, geography, feminism and fashion."

Director's Note

In 1901, at the Versailles Palace in France, two, female-presenting, Oxford professors experienced a time jump. https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/time-travel-oxford-versailles

Because they feared ridicule, they published their account as a fiction and under assumed names. The resulting book was the literary sensation of its day.

The intrepid travelers of On the Verge plan on publishing their time-traveling findings with the Boston Geographic Society. One of the many reasons why I love this play is because its three main characters plunge themselves into the unknown bravely and comically to find artifacts from the future and to discover that they are moving differently through time. Journeys change us, and the characters grow amid the physical and temporal challenges of mysterious Terra Incognita.

We are temporal by definition. If we move differently through time’s fabric, how does that change us? The Verge characters process through word play and journaling.

At the end of act one, much to their astonishment, Mary exclaims, “Ladies, we are beginning to know the future!”

Time slips happen. My cousin experienced one. I’ve experienced several time moments I can’t explain. Or as Shakespeare said, there is more in heaven and earth, than is dreamt in our philosophy.

ShelbySullivanPic.png

Shelby Chare' Sullivan (she/her) - Mary

Shelby is a locally based actor last seen on the Fells Point Corner Theatre stage in Stick Fly. She is very excited to be a part of the On The Verge cast and hopes to create art for the rest of her life!

BarbaraHauckPic.PNG

Barbara Madison Hauck (she/her) - Alex

Barbara is an avid community arts advocate and performer around Baltimore. Select credits include Marie Antoinette in Marie Antoinette and the Magical Negroes, Alais in Lion in Winter, Edward/Betty in Caryl Churchill's Cloud 9, Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland, Ruth in Blithe Spirit, Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, and the other Boleyn girl (Mary) in Anne of the Thousand Days. Barbara studied at the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin and holds a BFA in Acting from UMBC. She previously served as the first elected Artistic Director at Fells Point Corner Theatre where she remains a current member and volunteer. Barbara is, as ever, wildly grateful to all her collaborators for their patience, trust, and guidance.

NikiJayPic.png

Niki Jay (she/her) - Fanny

Niki is absolutely thrilled to be in her second performance with FPCT this season in One The Verge. A voice actor/audiobook narrator by trade (most recently featured in "Shades of Purple" by Niki Dominique), Niki has spent the last year broadening her acting horizons by stepping out of the recording booth and onto the stage. She dreams of someday working with performance capture for digital media, especially video games. When she's not auditioning for cartoons or studying in acting classes, she's tending to her many succulent plants. She would like us to add that none of the plants have ironic theatrical names, just in case you were wondering about that.

PenChanPic.PNG

Penelope Chan (She/Her) - Assistant director, Madame Nhu, Props, Wig, and Makeup Design

Penelope has performed multiple onstage and backstage roles since 2006 and is proud to also serve as Board Secretary of Fells Point Corner Theatre. Her second play, Honor: A Power Play had a staged reading in March 2024 as part of FPCT's Salon Series.

MorganStantonPic.PNG

Morgan Stanton (He/Him) - Alphonse, Grover, Yeti, The Gorge Troll, Mr. Coffee, Gus, Nicky Paradise

Morgan last appeared at Fells Point Corner Theatre as Gordon in Sarah Ruhl's Dead Man's Cell Phone. His first role in the theater was as Edward Sergeant in David Hare's Skylight. He has enjoyed the challenge of playing multiple characters at FPCT productions such as The Complete History of America (abridged) and Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, along with last year's Pink Pen Theatre production of Think Pink. His performance is dedicated to his children Sienna and Alec - may they forever be On the Verge to a brighter future.

SydGoldsteinPic.PNG

Syd Goldstein (she/they) - Swing

Syd has been acting since she was a young child, but this is her first show in Baltimore since her recent move from Cleveland. They have a BA in English from Kenyon College and are currently getting their Masters in Secondary Education. Some past roles include Dr. Charlotte in Falsettos, Lise in An American in Paris, Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Antonio in Twelfth Night. This has been a great first theatre experience in Baltimore, and she cannot wait for everyone to see this incredibly talented team at work!

Kimberley Lynne (she/her) - Director

Kimberley Lynne is the artistic director of Fells Point Corner Theatre and was pleased to include On the Verge in this 36thseason. Lynne was inspired by the original Center Stage production and has always longed to explore the play and Terra Incognita more. Lynne is a playwright, teacher, writer, and a member of the Dramatists Guild. She directed two salon series readings, Try and Honor: A Power Play and a full production of Dead Man’s Cell Phone at FPCT. Lynne will teach directing in the spring at Notre Dame University. She is overjoyed to create this magical world with such amazing, smart and funny artists. For more information, please visit https://kimberleylynne.wordpress.com

AnnaMcGreevyPic.png

Anna Hiser McGreevy (she/her) - Costume Design

Anna McGreevy is a children’s librarian by day and a historical fashion nerd by night. She is a recovering theater kid and is delighted to be back behind the scenes at Fells Point Corner Theatre. She costume designed FPCT’s Miss Holmes last season, so if you recognize any recycled pieces from that show, please lie to her face and say you’ve never seen it before. Millions of thanks to Kimberley and Penelope for encouraging her latent English major side with discussions about themes and character kernels and how clothing is our armor against the pressing world. She would also like to thank her husband-beast Matt for helping her carry so many things (not least of all her sanity), her parents for making her watch all those movie musicals as a kid, her little sister Edina for being her not-so-secret hookup for all the good Victorian stuff, and her friends for making space on their dining room tables, sofas, and floors for a traveling costumer.

JustinNepoPic.png

Justin Nepomuceno (he/him) - Scenic Design

Justin is a Baltimore based installation artist and designer. Previous credits include Scenic Designer for The Wolves, Pillar Rabbit, Raisin in the Sun, and Deathtrap at Spotlighters Theatre, Machinal at Fells Point Corner Theatre. HeikoPic.png

Heiko (He/Him) - Sound Design

Heiko is incredibly grateful and excited to be working at FPCT once again as he celebrates his 25th year in Baltimore Theatre. Personal highlights of that time include but are not limited to operating sound on a moving bus for Promenade with Single Carrot, performing countless hours of improvised comedy with The Early Monday Morning Show and Drop Three, portraying Doctor Everett Scott in The Rocky Horror Show, stage managing and sound designing Mr Burns: A Post-Electric Play and far too much 4 a.m. sleep-deprived set building. Heiko would like to thank the cast and crew for their passion, and his family, both blood and assimilated, and especially Mrs. Awesomesauce, for their constant support. Also, if today is your birthday, happy birthday to you!

Kay-MeganWashintonPic.png

Kay-Megan Washington (she/her) - Intimacy Direction

Kay-Megan is a seasoned stage, television and film actor, and now intimacy director. Having worked in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion and mental health treatment for both survivors and perpetrators of sexual violence in her non-acting life, moving into advocating for artist safety, bodily autonomy, and universal use of consent practices in the theatre community seemed an obvious next step. Kay-Megan has previously done intimacy direction for Whose Wives Are They Anyway? and Aida at Artistic Synergy, Becoming Wendy Darling at Towson University,  Love/Sick at Spotlighters Theatre,  and Intimate Apparel here at Fells Point Corner Theatre.

Jesse Lescallette (any) - Stage Manager

Jesse  is excited to be back at Fells Point Corner Theater and is grateful to work with an amazing cast and crew. He last worked as a stage manager for The Monroe Doctrine with Baltimore Theatre Project, and has worked on several other Baltimore shows as a stage hand and assistant stage manager, including being the assistant stage manager for Dead Man's Cell Phone with FPCT.
