2015 - 2016 Season:

#FIREintheHOUSE

Playing with fire (both literally and figuratively), this season promises to illuminate, intensify, and ignite!  For over one hundred years our location at 251 S. Ann St. stood as Engine 5 Firehouse, extinguishing local fires and serving the great city of Baltimore.  This season, we intend to serve our city by sparking a few of our own -- on stage!

DETROIT by Lisa D’Amour

Directed by Michael Zemarel

September 4th - October 4th 2015

*Baltimore Premiere!*

Ben, an ex-bank-drone-turned-techie and his wife Mary, a paralegal, see sudden signs of life at the deserted suburban house next door and invite their new neighbors over for a backyard barbecue.  Little do they know that their little patio party is about to combust in Lisa D’Amour’s Obie Award-winning comedy.

“…..totally nails the great, deep malaise of middle-class suburbia with a sustained energy and a wicked eye for telling details…funny as hell.”  New York Post

…Ms. D’Amour’s dark comedy is as rich and addictively satisfying as a five-layer dip served with a brimming bowl of tortilla chips.”  New York Times

BETRAYAL by Harold Pinter

Directed by Andrew Porter

October 23rd - November 8th 2015

Pinter’s haunting and time-bending fusion of simmering menace and sizzling desire presents the eternal triangle --- a husband, a wife, and the wife’s lover/husband’s best friend.  Betrayal brilliantly captures the fractured lives of adulterers torn between two beds and two sets of memories.

“…marvelous scenes packed with suppressed tension, torn loyalties and confused unspoken feelings.”  New York Times

“BETRAYAL is an exquisite play, brilliantly simple in form and courageous…”  Newsweek

COCK ( or THE COCKFIGHT PLAY ) by Mike Bartlett

Directed by Steve Goldklang

November 20th - December 20th 2015

*Baltimore Premiere!*

John’s stable relationship with his boyfriend is threatened when he accidentally falls in love with a woman.  As the pressure mounts, it’s boyfriend vs. girlfriend in a fierce battle to take possession of John, culminating in an explosive, no-holds-barred dinner party where sexual identity is stripped bare.

“A terrific comedy….Hypnotic and utterly contemporary.”   New York Times

“With the exception of Oscar Wilde, quarreling lovers are never as articulate and entertaining as they are in COCK, Mike Bartlett’s Battle Royal of wit and persuasion.”  Variety

THE 39 STEPS Adapted by Patrick Barlow

(From an original concept by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon)

Directed by Anthony Hinkle

January 15th - February 14th 2016

Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a gripping spy novel, add a flash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps: a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre! This two-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning treat is packed with over 150 characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of 4), an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers and some old-fashioned, fiery romance!  A show for the whole family!

“Ingenious!  A dizzy delight!”  New York Daily News

Rollicking fun!  Hugely entertaining!”  Sunday Times

VENUS IN FUR by David Ives

Directed by Lynda McClary

March 11th - April 3rd 2016

A struggling actress (wielding a whip as skillfully as she does the script) gives the audition performance of a lifetime in this spooky, sex-comedy---a suspense-packed study of the blistering erotics (and semiotics) of power in which the director and the actress prove to be seriously, almost scarily adept.

"The teeter-tottering test of wills that takes place in VENUS IN FUR makes even the most fraught encounter between a domineering director and a sensitive performer seem like a play date in the sandbox.”  New York Times

“Venus in Fur invites both carnal and cerebral excitement.”  Village Voice

TIME STANDS STILL by Donald Margulies

Directed by Barry Feinstein

April 15th - May 15th 2016

Sarah, a war zone photojournalist returns to the safety zone of her Brooklyn loft after the explosion of a roadside bomb has left her with multiple injuries.  Back at home, her long-time lover forces her to confront the addiction to danger that drives her back time and time again, risking everything in order to get the big story.

"Can you be a dispassionate, uninvolved observer of horrific events, recording them for posterity and still keep a sense of right and wrong, not to mention your sanity?.... the work is smart, stylish, timely and layered with an intriguing seriousness that inspires discussion after the curtain comes down…”  Associated Press
